Zachys’ Late Spring Auction on Friday, May 21st at Smith & Wollensky’s flagship restaurant in New York totaled $3,036,858 for 1060 lots sold, versus pre-sale estimates of $2,037,450–3,108,750. This is Zachys’ highest total for a standard one day sale since 2007, and over 99% of the lots were purchased by 255 unique buyers.

A new world record was achieved for Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982, with twelve bottles selling for $58,080 (Lot 393)1. Bidders were generally wild for Bordeaux from the top two vintages of the past thirty years, 1982 and 2000; Lafite Rothschild, Petrus, Ausone and Latour from those years represented the majority of the twelve highest grossing lots of the auction.

Wines from A Highly Admirable Collection of Some of the World’s Top Producers (Lots 465-494), particularly modern Burgundian rarities in astounding quantities, outshone their pre-sale estimates.

• Lot 467: 12 bottles Chambertin Domaine Leroy 1990 in original wood case | SOLD $19,360; estimate $12,000 – 18,000

• Lot 481: 12 bottles Chablis Les Clos Raveneau 2002 | SOLD $8470; estimate $4000 – 6000

At lots 768-791, a run of Rare Vintages of Mouton Rothschild inspired frenzied bidding for bottlings from the famed chateau ranging from 1950 through 2003 – perhaps a chase for birthday art collectibles! The entire collection attained $72,116, exceeding its pre-sale estimates of $33,000 – 51,400, with highlights including:

• Lot 768: 1 bottle Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1950 | SOLD $1694; estimate $500 – 800

Zachys’ Managing Director Michael Jessen noted, “We continue to be encouraged and amazed by the ongoing momentum of the wine auction market. We are seeing action from more buyers than ever from around the globe, driving fine wine prices to the market high prices of three years ago. We have planned incredible endof-season sessions for our June New York auction, and we look forward to seeing our friends and clients at the June 23rd evening sale and BYO dinner at Smith & Wollensky.”
