Discussing the sale Stephen Mould, Senior Director, Sotheby’s Wine Department, said:

“The wine market continues to bloom with nearly all lots finding buyers in our sale yesterday. Speculation surrounding the 2009 release prices for the First Growths has contributed to Lafite’s upward trajectory, with the 2000 vintage realising £19,550 for a case of 12 bottles, above the pre-sale high estimate of £17,000. This was sold to a European connoisseur, while both cases of La Tâche 1978 DRC, one of 11 bottles and the other of 12 bottles, sold for £36,800 and £34,500 respectively to a UK Private buyer. Live Online Bidding continues to prove popular – two of the top four lots in the sale went to online bidders and overall 33% of lots were bought online, the highest figure to date. July 14 is our last sale before the summer break and we have some really exciting cellars in this auction to round off what will be a very successful first half of the year for Sotheby’s global wine sales.”
